Although there are no Barbados specific studies disaggregating working-from-home by gender, the best available regional evidence paints an interesting picture.
Along with Bahamas and Costa Rica, Barbados ranks among the top three most telework-ready economies in the Caribbean, with an estimated 15% of its workforce holding jobs performable from home (Delaporte & Peña, 2020). Women, who tend to provide care responsibilities, are more likely to occupy those roles — and are willing to take up to a 10% pay cut to retain remote work (Brindis et al., 2024). On paper, Barbados is primed for a remote work revolution. In practice, anyone who has sat in a Bajan concrete house at 2 pm in July, knows the problem intimately.
The building stock could be fighting against productivity. The majority of Barbados's residential housing consists of concrete block construction — a legacy of hurricane resilience codes that prioritised structural survival over thermal performance. This is not a indictment of concrete or it being being a "bad" material. Thermal mass in concrete can play a beneficial role in stabilising indoor temperatures when it is paired with the right complementary elements: adequate roof insulation, external shading, and cross-ventilation designed to flush heat out at night. The problem in Barbados's aging housing stock is precisely the absence of those elements. Without them, these walls absorb heat throughout the morning and re-radiate it into the afternoon and evening: engineers call it diurnal heat lag.
The ceiling situation might compound this. The my pilot study data collected in Barbados indicate that without meaningful roof insulation — absent in most of the island's aging housing stock — attic and ceiling surface temperatures routinely exceed ambient air temperatures by 10–15°C. This is consistent with Soubdhan et al. (2005), who conducted controlled experiments on insulation materials in roofing systems under tropical conditions. They also demonstrated that without insulation, radiative heat flux through the roof is the dominant heat transfer pathway. Barbadian ceilings could effectively become a radiant heat panel precisely during peak working hours (that air conditioners fight against continuously).
The economic stakes are real. The International Labour Organisational (ILO) recorded at least 23 million workers across Latin America and the Caribbean transitioning to telework during the pandemic (Equal Times, 2022). Another Caribbean-specific industry analysis pegs the regional remote work opportunity at US$2 billion (Caribbean HR Solutions, 2025). Yet, with female labour participation in Barbados already lagging at 56% versus 68% for men (Central Bank of Barbados, 2022), thermally hostile homes disproportionately push women — already potentially managing household heat loads alongside care duties — out of productive remote work arrangements (H2, 2026).
Investigating Barbados's remote work potential is not just a broadband concern. It is, quite literally, a roofing conversation.
